AboutAbout Us

The Charlotte Museum of History, an educational organization, captures and shares the stories of the Charlotte region from settlement forward through exhibits and programs. The museum collects, preserves, researches, and interprets regional artifacts, including the oldest surviving house in Mecklenburg County, the 1774 Hezekiah Alexander Homesite.

WE TELL CHARLOTTE’S STORIES.
One of the area’s top 25 tourist attractions (Charlotte Business Journal), the Charlotte Museum of History offers a broad sweep of local history. The permanent exhibit galleries help visitors understand the history of Charlotte by showcasing and interpreting our growing collection. Visitors are led from the 18th century settlements through gold mines, slavery, the Civil War, and the rise of textiles, transportation, and commerce.

As the only history museum in Charlotte actively collecting, researching and preserving tangible, irreplaceable objects spanning three centuries of history, the museum houses more than 15,000 artifacts in its collection. Archival documents, photographs and genealogical papers offer an official historical record of Charlotte.

WE BRING HISTORY TO LIFE.
Take a step back in time with a guided or self-guided tour of the museum, and daily guided tours of the historic Hezekiah Alexander Homesite. Experience the past as a costumed docent takes you back to 18th century Charlotte. View the historic stone architecture and period furnishings and learn the colonial way of life.

The museum specializes in bringing history to life with family-friendly living history programs such as Twelfth Night, the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Day and monthly Living History Sundays. While you are at the museum, visit our Hands-on History Room and participate in fun, interactive activities perfect for younger visitors.

The museum is a not-for-profit organization supported by the Arts and Science Council of Mecklenburg County, and by the generous support of members, donors, foundations, and corporations. Membership benefits include free year round general admission to the museum, and discounted admission to special events. Corporate and private contributions enable the continued maintenance of the Homesite, grounds, and museum facilities.

WE ARE WHERE HISTORY HAS A HOME.
The 1774 Hezekiah Alexander House is the oldest surviving structure in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. It is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Visit the Rock House and literally walk in the footsteps of Patriot Hezekiah Alexander, his wife and 10 children - among Charlotte’s earliest citizens.
